Washing Cashmere Is Easier Than You Think

Limited edition cashmere sweater by GIVERDI

In short: Wash cashmere by hand in lukewarm water with a mild wool detergent, let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes, never rub, wring or twist it, and dry it flat on a towel away from sun and heat. You only need to do this a few times each winter, because airing it out after wearing is usually enough.

How often?

Less than you think. Let it air out for a day after wearing. Wash it only when it needs it, maybe a few times each winter.

What you need

A clean basin, lukewarm water (never hot), a mild wool detergent or a little baby shampoo, and two clean towels.

5 steps

  1. Fill the basin with lukewarm water and a little detergent.
  2. Turn the sweater inside out and press it down gently.
  3. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
  4. Move it gently through the water. Do not rub or twist.
  5. Drain and rinse with clean lukewarm water until the soap is gone.

Drying it right

Do not wring it out. Roll it in a towel to take the water out, then lay it flat on a dry towel and shape it. Dry it away from sun and heaters. Never hang it wet.

Avoid

Hot water, wringing, the tumble dryer, bleach and strong detergents.
